Mitsubishi FR-E740 Compatible Replacement: How to Choose a Drop-in VFD
The FR-E740 is one of the most common small-to-mid power inverters on factory floors — fans, pumps, conveyors and machine tool spindles. When one fails, production stops and the purchasing question is always the same: can I drop in a compatible unit without rewiring the panel? This guide walks through the checks that decide the answer.
First: is the drive actually dead?
Before you order anything, read the alarm on the panel. On the FR-E700 family the codes you will most often see are:
| Alarm | What it usually means | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| E.OC1 / E.OC2 / E.OC3 | Overcurrent during acceleration, steady run or deceleration | Disconnect the motor and reset; if it clears, look at the load or the motor cable, not the drive |
| E.OV1 / E.OV2 / E.OV3 | Overvoltage, often on deceleration | Increase decel time or fit a braking resistor |
| E.THT / E.THM | Inverter or motor overload tripped | Check the actual load current against the rating plate |
| E.FIN | Fin overheat — fan stopped or blocked | Clean the heatsink and check the cooling fan before condemning the drive |
| E.UVT | Undervoltage on the supply | Measure the incoming voltage; a supply problem is not a drive problem |
A large share of "dead inverter" calls turn out to be a fan, a cable, a parameter or a supply issue. Confirm the alarm list against the manual for your exact model before you spend money on hardware.
The six checks before ordering a compatible unit
- Power rating (kW) and current (A). Match or exceed the nameplate rating of the failed unit — and match the heavy duty / normal duty class, not just the kW figure.
- Supply voltage and phases. 1-phase 200V, 3-phase 400V and 3-phase 200V classes are not interchangeable. Confirm what your panel actually feeds.
- Control mode. If the application needs torque at low speed (hoists, mixers, extruders), you need vector control, not simple V/f.
- Communication. Note whether the PLC talks to the drive over RS485 (Modbus-RTU), CC-Link or an option card — the replacement has to speak the same protocol or the line will not start.
- Enclosure and mounting. Compare depth and width against the panel, and check whether the original is IP20 inside a cabinet or a standalone enclosed unit.
- I/O wiring. Count the digital inputs, analog inputs and relay outputs the machine actually uses, and confirm the terminal layout so the existing cables reach.
Where compatible units fit
A generic compatible unit is built to the mounting pattern, terminal layout and key ratings of the series it replaces, so it physically drops in and accepts the same wiring. For MRO buyers the practical benefits are lead time and cost: you are not waiting on a discontinued line, and you can standardise spares across several machines.
What we always recommend for a first order: buy one, bench-test it, then buy the batch. Send us a photo of the nameplate and we will confirm the match against ratings, control mode and communication before you pay.
Installation checklist
- Photograph and label every wire before you disconnect the old unit.
- Log the full parameter set of the failed drive first — if it still powers up, that parameter list is worth more than the hardware.
- Check the braking resistor, EMC filter and reactor; reuse them only if they test good.
- Verify cooling clearance and that the fan runs on first power-up.
- Re-torque the terminals after the first heat cycle.
