Conformal Coating & Anti-Salt-Fog Protection: Why Your Spare Parts Need It in Southeast Asia

By Xiamen Boyicheng Engineering Team · Oct 28, 2026 · 6 min read

If you maintain equipment in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines or any coastal region, you have seen the failure mode: a control board that worked perfectly for a year, then suddenly corrodes, develops leakage currents, or dies after the wet season. The root cause is usually the same — an unprotected PCB in a hot, humid, salt-laden atmosphere. Conformal coating is the industry's answer, and it is built into every unit we ship.

What conformal coating actually does

Conformal coating is a thin protective polymer film (acrylic, silicone or urethane) applied over assembled PCBs. It follows the board's contours — hence "conformal" — and provides:

The tropical failure timeline (uncoated vs coated)

EnvironmentUncoated PCBConformal-coated PCB
Indoor, dry climate10+ years typical10+ years
Tropical indoor, 85% RHCorrosion signs in 1-3 yearsSignificantly extended service life
Coastal / marine / salt fogFailures within months to 1-2 yearsEngineered to resist salt-fog attack

Our tropicalization process

  1. Board cleaning — flux residues are removed first; coating over contamination seals the problem in.
  2. Selective masking — connectors, test points and serviceable components are masked so the coating protects but does not block.
  3. Full-coverage spray — both sides of every board, including edge areas where corrosion typically starts.
  4. Curing & QC spot-check — 24-hour cure, then sampling inspection under UV light (most coatings fluoresce, making gaps visible).
Combined with our universal 50/60 Hz power design, every unit we ship is ready for deployment across any region — from a 50 Hz plant in Thailand to a 60 Hz site in Brazil — without local modification.

Is it worth requesting on your next order?

If your equipment operates anywhere humid, coastal or dusty — the answer is yes, and it costs you nothing extra with us because it is standard on all our compatible replacement PLC, VFD, servo, HMI and sensor products:

Generic VFD Compatible with Mitsubishi FR-E740 / FR-A840Generic PLC Module Compatible with Siemens 6ES7214 (CPU 1214C)Generic VFD Compatible with Yaskawa CIMR-V / CIMR-A (V1000 / A1000)Generic Photoelectric Sensor Compatible with Omron E3Z-D62

Frequently asked questions

Does conformal coating affect heat dissipation?

The coating layer is microns thin (typically 25-75 µm) and has negligible thermal impact on power components, which are cooled through heatsinks that are masked during coating. This is standard industry practice for drives and power supplies.

Can a coated board be repaired or reworked?

Yes. Coated boards can be reworked locally by softening the coating with a compatible solvent, and the repaired area is re-coated afterwards. We mask serviceable connectors so field replacement of accessible parts remains possible.

How can I verify a board is actually coated?

Inspection is simple: coated PCBs show a glossy, slightly hydrophobic surface under light, and a water droplet beads up instead of spreading. We can provide coating-process photos and QC records with your shipment.
