Servo Drive Troubleshooting: 7 Common Alarms and What to Check Before Replacing

By Xiamen Boyicheng Engineering Team · Oct 28, 2026 · 9 min read

Servo alarms are stressful because they stop the whole axis — but a large share of "dead servo drive" calls turn out to be wiring, noise or mechanical problems, not the drive itself. Before you order a replacement, run through the seven checks below. If the drive is genuinely failed, we will get you back online with a compatible replacement kit.

The 7 most common servo alarms

AlarmTypical causeQuick check
Overcurrent (OC)Motor cable damage, phase short, sudden mechanical jamDisconnect motor, run drive unloaded — if alarm clears, check motor and mechanics
Overvoltage (OV)Decelerating high-inertia load without regen resistor; supply spikeVerify braking resistor is connected and measures correct resistance
Encoder errorEncoder cable damaged, shield broken, connector contaminatedReseat connectors; inspect cable along the drag chain; measure shield continuity
Overload (OL)Mechanical binding, wrong gain settings, undersized driveRotate the mechanism by hand (power off) — it should move freely
Position deviationGains too low/high, load inertia changed, coupling slipCheck coupling screws and re-run auto-tuning after any mechanical change
Regenerative alarmMissing or failed braking resistor for vertical axesConfirm resistor installed for Z-axis and hoisting applications
Communication lossEthernet/pulse train cable, EMI from nearby VFDs, groundingSeparate signal cables from power cables; verify shield grounding at one end

The 10-minute pre-replacement routine

  1. Photograph everything — alarm code, wiring, parameter screens. You will need this for the replacement's parameter migration anyway.
  2. Power off and measure — motor cable insulation, braking resistor value, supply voltage balance.
  3. Check the mechanical side — binding, belt tension, brake stuck on a vertical axis.
  4. Rule out EMI — encoder and communication cables run separately from motor and power cables? Shield grounded?

When replacement is the right call

Replace the drive when: the alarm persists with the motor disconnected, the power section shows burnt components or a blown bus, the unit has a repair history, or repair quotes exceed ~40% of replacement cost. For discontinued models, a compatible replacement kit is typically faster than any repair shop.

Frequently asked questions

When should I repair a servo drive instead of replacing it?

As a rule of thumb: if the repair quote exceeds roughly 40% of a replacement unit's price, replacement wins — especially for older platforms where used parts availability is poor. A compatible replacement also removes the risk of repeat failures from age-worn components.

Will a compatible servo kit work with my existing motor and encoder?

Our servo drive kits are engineered as direct-fit alternatives for mainstream platforms including Mitsubishi MR-J4/MR-JE, Delta ASDA-B2/A2, Siemens V90 and Yaskawa SGD7S. Motor and encoder interface matching is confirmed against your nameplate before we quote — always send the exact model.

What information should I send for a fast recommendation?

A photo of the drive nameplate, the motor nameplate, and the alarm code the drive displays (if any). With those three items we can confirm the matching replacement, stock and dispatch time within one working day.
