How to pick the right VFD
Start from the motor nameplate: rated kilowatts and the voltage class (single-phase 230 V, three-phase 230 V or 400 V). A drive is sized to the motor, never the other way round — and if the motor is oversized for its load, size to the load’s actual current, not the nameplate, or the drive will trip on light-load instability.
Then check overload duty and control mode. Fans and centrifugal pumps need only light duty and V/f control; conveyors, mixers and positive-displacement pumps need normal-duty overload (typically 150% for one minute); hoists and extruders need heavy-duty ratings and often vector control with an encoder. Braking is the next question: high-inertia loads that stop fast need a braking resistor or regenerative unit, or the drive trips on overvoltage during deceleration.
Finally, the environment. Panel-mounted IP20 drives in humid or coastal plants should be specified with conformal-coated boards (tropicalization) and kept clear of conductive dust; all drives listed here run on both 50 and 60 Hz supplies. When replacing an installed drive, photograph the nameplate and the terminal cover before you power down — the terminal layout and keypad type are what make a swap fast.
VFD selection questions
How do I size a replacement VFD?
Match the motor nameplate kilowatts and voltage class first, then check the overload duty the application needs (light duty for fans and pumps, normal or heavy duty for conveyors, mixers and hoists). Confirm the control mode — basic V/f is enough for fans and pumps, vector control gives better torque at low speed. Finally check braking: high-inertia loads that decelerate quickly need a braking resistor or the drive will trip on overvoltage. Send us the motor nameplate photo and we size the drive for you at quotation.
Can I replace a VFD with a different brand?
You can, but every parameter must be re-entered in the new drive’s format and the terminal layout changes, so budget commissioning time. Staying inside the same brand family keeps the terminal numbering, keypad menus and communication protocol, which is why most urgent replacements are same-family swaps. We quote both options — send the old nameplate and we will flag what changes.
What is the difference between compact and general-purpose drives?
Compact drives (FR-D700, ATV12 / ATV320, V20 class) are built for simple machines: fixed overload duty, V/f control, smaller I/O, no expansion slots. General-purpose drives (FR-E740 / A840, G120, MD500 class) add vector control, higher overload capacity, fieldbus options and pluggable terminals. If the original drive had an option card or ran a communication network, you need the general-purpose class — check the old unit for option slots before ordering a compact replacement.
Are these original drives or compatible replacements?
Every VFD on this page is a generic aftermarket compatible replacement, NOT an original OEM product. Brand names and model numbers are the property of their owners and are used only to state what each unit replaces. Units are built to the same frame sizes and terminal layout, are inspected and run-tested before shipment, and carry our 12-month warranty as seller — InverterPLC is an independent supplier, not an authorised distributor of any brand named here.
How long is the lead time, and do you ship to Southeast Asia?
Every unit is procured per order. We confirm the exact lead time at quotation — typically 1 to 3 weeks — and state it in writing before you pay. We ship by DHL / FedEx / UPS express to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore, and by sea or air freight for consolidated orders.
